Nigeria’s First Music Certification Body – Credible or nah?

Written by:

Yesterday, WeTalkSound took to Twitter to announce the launch of Nigeria’s first music certification body in collaboration with TurnTable Charts.

We got different reactions to this new development from some Twitter peeps. Before getting into that, you might need to know these…

First of all, music recording certification is a way of certifying that a record has sold or streamed a certain amount of units. The requirements for this are based solely on the certifying bodies representing the Music Industry in various countries worldwide like the RIAA for the United States of America and now the RCN for Nigeria.

Each requirements are personalised according to the standards of each body. For The Recording Certification of Nigeria (RCN), here’s what you should be expecting and how they intend to go about it.

Generally, the certification awards consists of different combinations of Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond awards in ascending order of sales requirement but the RCN are starting with the Gold and Platinum first.

Starting with Short-Form videos, here is the criteria that each video needs to meet before being certified and awarded.

Now while some thought this was a huge and awesome idea, some were of different opinions as expected….complaints on how small the units were, their theme colour, the credibility amongst others.

Personally, I think this is a big contribution to the culture. I must commend the team behind this and I hope credibility is maintained going forward. For more infos on this moving forward, you can follow them on Twitter @RCNigeria_

Xoxo, Axara.
